The mission of the Delmarva Space Sciences Foundation is to provide public education. This will be accomplished in many different ways. The following concepts are just a few to be utilized:
1) Public education through outreach events at various locations throughout the Delmarva Peninsula, such as boardwalk astronomy and other events open to the general public and free of charge. These will be held in association with existing astronomy clubs and societies, or as independent events.
2) Education in conjunction with the school districts on the peninsula through classroom lectures and after school activities to also include astronomy nights at the schools as requested.
3) Support for the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Big Brothers and Sisters and other similar organizations.
The foundation will provide equipment for use as needed, in the form of telescopes, computers, tables, organization and advertising. The foundations will coordinate to provide handouts for the public through its various resources. The predominant focus will always be toward interesting the children in not only astronomy, but all the STEM subjects. STEM refers to the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
The Foundation will work to bolster a close working relationship with NASA, especially through the Wallops Island facility. It is anticipated that the foundation will provide its resources at NASA Wallops in conjunction with rocket and balloon launches, or other significant events to provide the general public a greater exposure to the various space sciences.
The foundation looks toward the future and the possibility of constructing a structure which will house its observatory and meeting room / classroom for public events and research.
The Delmarva Space Sciences Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation which is able to receive tax deductible donations and pursue grants in furtherance of its mission.
